What is Pruning? Pruning is the process of selective removal of parts of a plant, such as branches, buds, or roots. This process should thin out old non-productive wood and encourage the vine to put its energy into new fruiting wood. The best time to prune is when the vines are dormant, usually taking place in early or late winter. Pruning is essential to produce good yields of quality fruit.
